Adanel was a Wise-woman from the House of Marach. She was a daughter of Malach and Meldis, and older sister of Magor. Adanel had many other brothers and sisters as well, and they also might have been younger than she.

Adanel ended up marrying Belemir of the House of Bëor, a great-grandson of Bëor the Old himself. Adanel was the mother of five children and her fifth and last child was a son Beren (Belemir's son).^[1] Adanel's son Beren was later was the grandfather of his great namesake grandson the renowned Beren Erchamion (Beren the One-handed) of whom his daughter the famed Emeldir the Man-hearted named after him.

The Wise of the People of Marach were the only Men to preserve the tale of their original sin, when, soon after their awakening, the Men chose to worship Melkor instead of Eru. Adanel told this tale (called the Tale of Adanel in Morgoth's Ring) to Andreth of the House of Bëor.

Etymology

The name Adanel was a Sindarin of unclear meaning. It is likely to have come from the words adan, meaning 'man' (as a race, rather than in gender), and el, meaning 'star'. This would give the meanings "star of man" or perhaps "man of the star" to her name.
