The Úvalear, also called the Shadow Folk, were the Fays that inhabited Hisilómë according to the early version of the legendarium in The Book of Lost Tales.[1]

After the Gnomes reached the Great Lands during their exile, they had dealings and some "trouble" with the Úvalear in Hisilómë. It was said that the Úvalear were neither "of the Valar nor of Melko" and "that they came from the" primeval void after the world was made.[1]

In other versions[]

In the earlier versions of The Book of Lost Tales, the terms "Shadow Folk" and "Shadow-folk" were names given in fear by Men to the Lost Elves (of the Great Journey) who inhabited Hisilómë before their arrival.[2]

The poem A Song of Aryador is associated with the Shadow Folk,[3] though it is untold whether the Shadow Folk in the poem refer to the Ilkorindi Elves or to the Úvalear Fays.
