Úmanyar (Quenya for 'Not of Aman')[1] is another name for some of the Moriquendi, in particular the Sindar ('Grey Elves') and the Nandor ('Green Elves'), as opposed to the Amanyar, 'Those of Aman', and Avamanyar, 'Those who would not go to Aman'. They were made up of the Teleri, the kindreds who started, but never completed the journey to Aman or descended from them.
Many of the Sindar in Doriath, while not Amanyar and had never seen the light of the Two Trees of Valinor, were considered more enlightened having spent some time in the protection and radiance of Melian, one of the Maiar.
