The Ósanwe-kenta or "Enquiry into the Communication of Thought" is a text by J.R.R. Tolkien pertaining to his Middle-earth legendarium, written as a typescript of eight pages, probably in 1960, published in the Elvish Linguistic Fellowship's journal Vinyar Tengwar issue 39 in 1998.

Summary[]

Within the frame of Middle-earth, the text is a summary by an unnamed editor of an original treatise by Pengolodh, a loremaster of the Elves in the First Age. The text concerns "direct thought-transmission" (telepathy), or sanwe-latya ("thought-opening") in Quenya. Pengolodh appended this text to his work, the Lhammas, due to the implications that Elvish grammar and language had on telepathy, in light of the decline of telepathy's use among incarnate peoples of Arda.

Tolkien's etymological notes to the text were featured in Vinyar Tengwar issue 41 (2000).

The Ósanwe-kenta is among the many obscure topics featured in the essay compilation The Nature of Middle-earth (2021).[1]
