Éalá! Éarendel Engla Beorhtast! was a poem written by J.R.R. Tolkien, in September 1914, at Phoenix Farm, Gelding, Nottinghamshire. It was about the sailor Éarendel, who later became Eärendil. It was originally called The Voyage of Éarendel the Evening Star, as well as an Old English version called Scipfæreld Earendeles Æfensteorran, and then the title it is now.[1]

First stanza[]

Éarendel arose where the shadow flows
At Ocean's silent brim;
Through the mouth of night as a ray of light
Where the shores are sheer and dim
He launched his bark like a silver spark
From the last and lonely sand;
Then on sunlit breath of a day's fiery death
He sailed from Westerland.
