The War of the Ring ("La Guerra dell'Anello") è l'ottavo libro della serie The History of Middle-earth, pubblicato in Inglese nel 1990 e inedito in lingua Italiana.
Esso è inoltre il terzo volume di The History of The Lord of the Rings, che documenta il processo di scrittura de Il Signore degli Anelli.
Il libro copre parte de Le due Torri e parte de Il ritorno del Re. Seguendo lo sviluppo dei libri precedenti, soprattutto The Treason of Isengard, il libro segue la trama de Il Signore degli Anelli fino all'apertura del Nero Cancello, dunque fino alla Battaglia del Morannon.
Il titolo The War of the Ring fu concepito come titolo per il quinto libro de Il Signore degli Anelli, poi scartato.

All'inizio di ogni volume della History of Middle-earth è presente un'iscrizione in Tengwar, scritta da Christopher Tolkien e che descrive il contenuto del libro. L'iscrizione presente in questo volume è la seguente:
