The Return of the Shadow ("Il Ritorno dell'Ombra") è il sesto libro della serie The History of Middle-earth, pubblicato in inglese nel 1988 e inedito in lingua italiana.
Esso è inoltre il primo volume di The History of The Lord of the Rings, che documenta il processo di scrittura de Il Signore degli Anelli.
Il libro copre gran parte del contenuto de La Compagnia dell'Anello. Contiene le tre fasi iniziali della stesura de Il Signore degli Anelli, compreso ciò che Tolkien definì "il capitolo cruciale" che stabilisce la trama centrale, "L'ombra del passato". Si conclude con l'ingresso della Compagnia nelle Miniere di Moria.
Il titolo "The Return of the Shadow" era un titolo proposto inizialmente per La Compagnia dell'Anello, che fu successivamente scartato. Tolkien concepì dei titoli per tutti i 6 libri che compongono LoTR, ma tutti furono scartati. Tuttavia, alcuni di questi furono usati per i volumi successivi della The History of Middle-Earth.

All'inizio di ogni volume della History of Middle-earth è presente un'iscrizione in Tengwar, scritta da Christopher Tolkien e che descrive il contenuto del libro. L'iscrizione presente in questo volume è la seguente:
