Nenning est un fleuve qui se situait dans l'ouest du Beleriand.
Géographie[]
Le Nenning prend sa source dans un ensemble montagneux au sud de l’Ered Wethrin. Il descend ensuite vers le sud, traversant le Beleriand Occidental pour se jetter dans Belegaer au niveau du havre d'Eglarest.[1]

Le Nenning sert de frontière entre le Royaume de Nargothrond et celui de Círdan
Il disparait lors de la Submersion du Beleriand, après la Guerre de la Grande Colère à la fin du Premier Âge.[2]
Anciennes versions du légendaire[]
La rivière Nenning, sous le nom de "Eldor", apparait sur la première carte du Silmarillion faite par Tolkien, qui lui servait de support dans son travail de rédaction des premières versions de l’œuvre.[3] Le nom Eldor et changé en "Eglor" dans la seconde version des Annales du Beleriand (AB II).[4]
Lors de corrections des Annales Grises (GA) et du Quenta Silmarillion tardif (LQ), le nom Eglor et rayé et remplacé par "Eglahir" puis "Nenning". Quand Tolkien corrige le nom en Nenning il ne barre pas le nom Eglahir, comme quand il modifie complétement un nom. Peut-être voulait-il garder les deux formes. Eglahir se retrouve dans la racine de Eglarest, le Havre situé a l'embouchure du fleuve.[5][6] Dans la version publié du Silmarillion seul le nom Nenning a été conservé par Christopher Tolkien.
