Joan Elizabeth Turville-Petre est une philologue anglaise née en 1911. Élève puis amie de Tolkien, elle enseigne à l’université d’Oxford spécialisée dans l’Anglo-Saxon et le vieux norrois.

Joan Turville-Petre (née Blomfield) est la fille de Sam Blomfield et Kate Barton. Elle est née à Colchester, Essex le 10 mai 1911. Elle commence ses études en 1930 au collège Somerville De l’université d’Oxford ou elle fera sa carrière. Elle est l’élève puis la collègue et l’amie de J. R. R. Tolkien. « Tutor and Fellow » de 1941 à 1946, elle devient conférencière (lecturer) d’anglais de 1946 à 1965 puis chercheuse honoraire du collège de 1965 à sa mort en 2006.
Le 7 janvier 1943, elle épouse Gabriel Turville-Petre, un collègue d’Oxford. Il n’y a pas d’invités mais Tolkien et sa femme Edith sont leurs témoins. Elle a trois fils Thorlac Francis Samuel (6 Janvier 1944), Merlin Oswald (2 juillet 1946) et Brendan Arthur Auberon (16 septembre 1948 – 6 décembre 1981).
Elle meure le 9 mars 2006 à 94 ans.[1]
