Personally I sort of wonder if they were directly created by Eru himself after things started going to shite in Arda, perhaps in the Second or even Third Age. Perhaps he created them the way they were so Sauron or other forces of evil would not take notice of them, yet he knew they would play a huge role in overcoming evil in Middle-Earth. If that’s the case that could explain why hobbits aren’t mentioned at all in the Silmarillion, which mentions pretty much every over race and it’s origins as far as I’m aware.
I still say the dragons have to be Maiar. They (or at least Smaug) has immense power and is clearly sapient (like elves, dwarves, humans, etc), while there is no species of reptile in Tolkien’s work that we know of that possesses higher intelligence (ie that could have been corrupted by Morgoth). Melkor had no power to raise a creature’s intelligence from that of an animal to a sapient (and extremely powerful) being from what we know; after all, Orcs are a downgrade from the elves.
^^It’s not necessarily about “hating” on it, but it’s about being realistic and not getting one’s hopes up too much about it, given the circumstances.
^thats actually a really good idea. I don’t know if Tolkien ever mentioned increased sexual activity with the decline of Númenor, but it is most definitely plausible. Would fit with the pattern of cultural change and turn from traditional religion.

I think there’s a very high chance that, for good or bad, the show abandons the socially conservative nature of Tolkien’s works in favor of a Game of Thrones-style show who’s popularity is driven by sexual content, among other things. A lot of TV shows are like that these days, and unfortunately I could see Amazon going that route to make more money off the show. These big companies will sell the soul of a franchise in a heartbeat if it means making more money; the Star Wars sequel trilogy is proof of that (throwing away the rich storytelling of Legends and basically retelling the original trilogy in a new era because the Lucasfilm bigwigs thought it would make them more money).
I haven’t totally written off this show yet, but I am very cautious about it

Before his death Tolkien started a story called “The New Shadow” which was basically the subtle rise of evil in a new generation who had forgotten the events and sacrifices of the War of the Ring. I believe it was set late in Aragorn’s son’s reign, not quite sure the year. Sadly the story was left incomplete, so we’ll never know where Tolkien would’ve went with it. So basically we can gather that some kind of evil arose a couple centuries after the events of Lotr, we just don’t know the details
Yeah I liked them, I had seen the Lotr trilogy before but watching the first Hobbit movie is what really got me into the franchise. Each of the films were pretty good, though they weren’t true to the books they still were very enjoyable. I liked the Dwarves, and how each of them had a unique personality, and it was cool to see more of their culture. I liked most of the changes, though I think if they were going to make Kili x Tauriel a thing they should have had Kili live.
I wouldn’t really change anything in Lotr, it’s pretty fantastic as it is.
Id probably change the Hobbit movies just a bit, maybe add an ending where Kili lived and went into exile with Tauriel or something. Maybe add a young Aragorn cameo, seeing as they added Legolas to the story.
My favorite characters are the Dwarves, and the Dwarven race as a whole. I find them to be a very interesting culture and I hope they get a nice spotlight in the Amazon series.

I’d like to see more Dwarves, and more Dwarven culture. I like elves and hobbits, but honestly I feel like Dwarves could use a bit more screen time, and we could see them more in their prime.
I’d like to perhaps see at least a glimpse of Valinor, just to see what it’s like in film.

I believe I remember hearing they got destroyed or taken by dragons
So when the Valar sent the Istari east to Middle Earth, the two blue wizards, Alatar and Pallando, are believed to have gone East in an attempt to thwart Sauron’s influence in those regions. However Tolkien implied that they failed, and ended up starting cults.
So in the Fourth Age, with Sauron gone, is it possible that one or both of them could become the new Dark Lord(s)? I don’t think they immediately could have risen to power, especially as long as Aragorn and most of the other Fellowship members were still alive, but perhaps during the reign of one of Elessar’s descendants?

^Id never thought of them being Yavanna’s creation before, but that makes sense. It’s possible that after Aulë created the Dwarves that she asked Ilúvatar to create hobbits.
My theory is that they’re some mix of man and dwarf. They have some characteristics of dwarves, such as living in holes in the ground, while they’re shorter lived like men.
