I heard they broke up at one point, Frodo and Sam snuck off and formed a duo, leaving Merry and Pippin in a lurch. Didn't Gollum hook up with Frodo and Sam to form a trio for a time while the band was broken up? Too bad Frodo had to leave the band early to go to the Undying Lands.

Marillion were named after The Silmarillion.

If stupid jokes are allowed (and it looks like they are) I'd like to put forward Pelennor Rigby. And say that there was a point in my life where I was genuinely going to do a Billy Bragg tribute act called Billbo Braggins.

Tis true about Marillion. I'm sure you can find a source for it because I'm not certain where or when I read it.

It looks like they changed the name which was originally Silmarillion (1977) to avoid legal issues.
