Aiedaeil What would have that changed ?

Neglected by who ? The Ents were still there, caring for the forest. Though Fangorn was also chopped down according to Elrond and Treebeard. It used to be waaaay bigger.

@Jiriu by the Rohirrim. Also, there were at most 25 Ents left in that forest, and it's a pretty big forest

@Jiriu Treebeard said that many of the Ents have become "tree-ish", or dying, and I'm guessing that there are not very many to begin with, let alone literally thousands of years after they were created.

Didn't sauron murder them just because they could unintentionally throw a hitch in his plans? something to do with gondor and arnor. Its on Nerd of the Rings

Sauron doesn't need reasons to destroy things. He couldn't control the Ent-Wives so he burned their lands to cinders and them with it. Though i think he did it to slow the armies of the Last Alliance.
