Of all the changes that director Peter Jackson made to the stories when making the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies, what are some that you think were for the better?
This might be controversial, but I would say dropping the Tom Bombadill sequence from the movie version was a good choice. I like Tom Bombadill a lot in the book and he is a good character, but I don’t think he would have been easy for new/casual (ie those who hadn’t read the books) viewers to understand. One of the main threads of the trilogy is the Ring’s corrupting power, with even Gandalf refusing it because he knows it could corrupt him, and Galadriel being briefly tempted. So I think having a character that was completely unaffected by the Ring would be super confusing to casual viewers and it would seem to muddle the story.
