Maybe it was to trick the cave troll into thinking he was dying and to leave him to "die"

@Tolkien24 I think it can also be psychological. If someone stabs me with something for real my mind and body will probably react at first like I was stabbed until I realize that it didn’t really penetrate me

@Robmpn3 Yeah, especially because the mail was driven into his skin

It was really just the force of the hit not so much a puncture but the mail driven in is also posable we were never specified on that

I think it actually was specified in the book, I can't prove it, since I lent my copy of Fellowship to my friend, but I think it's near the start of Part 2, Chapter 6, when Aragorn is healing Frodo's wound

But im pretty sure he said it was "not a fatal wound" when Aragorn discovered the Mithril
