I think it could work as long as they stay true to the themes of LOTR and don’t go full Game of Thrones. That might be difficult considering that the stuff that happens in the second age, when the show is set, is a little more mature than the stuff we get in the Hobbit and LOTR, like Sauron encouraging the Numenoreans to do human sacrifice in the name of Morgoth. And given that the show will probably end with Isildur keeping the ring and essentially being the reason for all the bad stuff in LOTR even happening, it probably won’t be as optimistic as LOTR but is still think there’s a whole lot of stuff that could be really awesome. The fall of numenor would be really interesting to see and it would be really cool to get some more detail into the stuff that the Jackson films left out like Anarion, Celebrimbor, Gil-galad, Ar-pharazon. These are pretty important characters that got left out of the Jackson films to save time but now that we’re getting a show, they have way more time to focus on these things.
